A Message from Tony M. Yee, president
It is with tremendous sorrow upon learning of the passing of our former Mayor Thomas M. Menino.
"Tom," as he always wanted us to call him, is one of the warmest, caring, and "down to earth" individual we have ever met.
He offered his time via group meetings with the Executive Directors and the Board Presidents of 20 Main Streets in Boston. He always welcomed us with a warm smile and firm hand shake.
Mr Menino brought the Main Street program to Boston and whenever there's an issue in the community or with any of the Main Streets, he was always swift with a solution. He genuinely cared about the communities in Boston.
Mr Menino had attended all of our events. He enjoyed the Lion Dance and the Family Concept that all of our Chinatown festivals fostered. As he came with the business mind of revitalizing business districts, he always made time to stop and say hello to the children and the parents.
"Main Streets is one of his favorite projects" is what you would hear throughout the city. It was imperative that every district was doing well and he enjoyed the overall success of the Boston Main Streets Program. He always mentioned how Chinatown Main Street was doing great with its strongest financial base. And now with Mayor Walsh doing an outstanding job, the Main Streets Program will get even bigger.
After being labeled the longest running Mayor in the history of the entire United States, he is still incredibly "down to earth." He was always there for us. We will truly miss him because he treated us like our dad.
Today is a sad day for us and for the millions of lives that he touched.
Tony M. Yee
